Photovoltaic Cells – A Simple Way to Generate Electricity
Solar Panels is a very popular home improvement item. They can provide you with a renewable source of energy to help you cut costs during tough economic times. In order to put Solar Panels in your house, there are two options. You can purchase them already made for you or build your own. I personally like building my own Solar Panels and have had great success. Here is a little bit about Panels and how they work.
A solar panel, also known as photovoltaic panel, is a diode-based electrical device that transforms the power of sunlight into electrical energy directly by the photoelectric effect, which is basically a chemical and physical phenomenon. Photovoltaic (PV) cells are used to convert sunlight directly into usable electricity using the principle of the photoelectric effect. These cells come in many different varieties and types. Some are better than others. For example the most expensive photovoltaics panels on the market today use crystals of silicon called nithium ferrous or nfew.
The photovoltaic cells are stacked up in a frame, usually made of fiberglass or some other flexible yet durable material. They are wired and connected together to create a complete photovoltaics panel. The flat face of the panel is made of glass or plastic. This “glass” surface has an anti-reflective layer on it to prevent the sun’s rays from reaching the other side and creating harmful heat. On the other side of the panel, a second layer is made of an antireflection layer that slows or deflects most of the sunlight and thus reduces the amount of electricity produced by the solar panels.
There are two types of solar cells – the conventional silicon-based cells and the new polymer-based cells. The new type is said to be even more efficient and can produce large amounts of electricity at a lower initial cost. It has been speculated that the new polymer cells may rival the efficiency of the best photovoltaics cells in the future. Scientists have theorized that the new cells are due to a reaction between the two types of semiconductors – one type absorbs energy from the sun’s rays while the other one reflects it back. Another theory states that the polymers transform the silicon’s electrical charge into an opposite one.
When the sun shines on the polymer solar cells, electrons flow from the positive side to the negative side. As each incoming photon makes its way through the silicon material, the electricity produced is dependent upon the type of electron that was present in the photon. If the photon had a positive charge, it would produce an electric current while if it had a negative charge, it would stop. Scientists believe that this phenomenon is what creates the photovoltaic effect.
There are many areas where you can now get the photovoltaics cell needed for your own household. However, in order for them to work properly, they must be exposed to direct sunlight. You can now find thin-film solar cells that work just as well as the conventional thin-film photovoltaics cells, if not better. Thin-film silicon solar cells use thin layers of crystalline materials to construct their structure. They can be made using various polymer solutions or through the use of a special low-cost manufacturing process.
