Unlike conventional geothermal power plants DTE Deep Thermal Powerplant produces the electricity in the underground and leads it to the surface.
Instead of the usual drill up to four kilometers deepth, a six to eight kilometers deep access shaft is planned. Usual drill tests are not necessary, as the required heat is one hundred percent guaranteed in this depth (no exploration risk). The challenges of the project are therefore mainly of engineering nature. The necessary technologies from the mining and mine construction, however, are in place and tested.
